Remember BOSH? The open source tool chain for release engineering, deployment and life cycle management of very large scale instances of Cloud Foundry, announced a few weeks back? They initially released it with support for VMware infrastructure and Amazon EC2. Since it was open source, there were expectations that others will build the necessary interface for other cloud infrastructure platforms like OpenStack, CloudStack, etc.. In fact, during the OpenStack Conference in San Francisco a week or so back, they even had an hackathon to get developers working on building Cloud Provider Interface (CPI) implementation for OpenStack. It is becoming a reality today with an announcement by Piston Cloud (previous CloudAve coverage).
Piston Cloud Computing Inc., an OpenStack based enterprise cloud infrastructure vendor, announced a new open source project that will let CloudFoundry run on top of OpenStack. Essentially, Piston Cloud will develop, distribute and support a BOSH CPI for OpenStack. First it will bring this capability to be part of Piston Enterprise OS and submit for consideration as OpenStack incubation project.
This is a great news in many regards. OpenStack community is expanding and many service providers are considering OpenStack to be their underlying cloud infrastructure. Sooner than later, they will need to move up the stack and offer PaaS offerings (Check out my series, PaaS is the future of cloud services) and this BOSH implementation will help them run CloudFoundry on top of their cloud infrastructure. I really hope that OpenStack foundry embrace this project and make it even better and versatile.
