Well, Green is the new buzzword in today’s technological world. The growing
realization about the harmful impact of global climate change is driving the new
trend towards green technology. We have seen how people are seeing the green
benefits of virtualization and other developments in computing. One of the
merits of cloud computing, touted by evangelists like us, is the amount of power
saved due to the utility nature of the cloud, the power savings due to
virtualization of servers, etc.. In short, Green Computing is a familiar term
for Cloud Computing enthusiasts.
Grid Computing now is an UK based consortium that helps in the development
and deployment of grid computing services and applications. It serves as a
platform for early adopters and technology leaders to better understand and
utilize the latest technologies in their organizations. It is a collaboration
between Intellect, the National e-Science Centre and CNR Ltd. This effort is also funded by the
government and other sources.
They have announced their annual competition, called as Competition 2008,
supported by the British Computer Society, The 451 Group, Intellect, Memset,
Microsoft, National e-Science Centre, Oxford e-Research Centre, the Technology
Strategy Board and WWF. This competition is open to all citizens of UK and it is
free to participate. The main focus of this competition is Grid Computing for a
Greener Planet. In the first round of the competition, which is due on October
17th 2008, the participants should submit a 1000 words proposal for an
innovative grid computing solution for environmental problems.
The winners from the first stage will be invited to an one day workshop where
they will get an opportunity to further develop their ideas and submit a
detailed proposal based on their initial ideas. For the final stage, 5-10
participants will be selected and they will get an opportunity to present their
ideas in front of a panel of judges.
If you live in UK and have an exciting and innovative idea on how grid
computing can be used to solve an environmental problem, this competition offers
a great chance to test your ideas. If you want more details on the competition,
