rPath (see previous CloudAve coverage), the North Carolina based company offering deployment and maintenance solutions across physical, virtual and cloud environments, has partnered with Collabnet, whose popular platform is used for distributed software development, to bring in agility to cloud application deployment. They announced their partnership today with the hope that they can deliver an integrated and automated solution for continuous delivery of applications and application changes, from development through operations.
rPath offers a platform which is based on a version controlled repository where you can dump your apps, OS, Middleware and policies and let the platform
- automate the generation of images for rapid deployment to physical, virtual or cloud
- automatically take care of updates and roll backs on all the deployed systems
- help with audit compliance through reporting
- ensure a consistency in the entire lifecycle
Collabnet’s Agile Lifecycle Management platform, called Teamforge, helps manage the development activities of distributed teams from requirements through release – and provides traceability between all artifacts including requirements, issues, code commits, build/test results, file releases, documents, etc.. Their recent acquisition, Codesion Cloud Services, helps them offer cloud based services to the development team by instantly provisioning Subversion and Git repositories and also deploying the applications instantly in production.
This partnership means that both companies can coordinate the sales and marketing efforts of their products and, more importantly, integrate them to bring in speed to application development, deployment and management in the cloud. The CollabNet TeamForge platform brings an integrated suite of web-based release planning, source code management (SCM), issue tracking, and collaboration tools to rPath’s deployment and IT operations users. By centralizing management of users, projects, processes and assets, TeamForge dramatically reduces costs, increases productivity and improves project visibility. Whatever be the development methodology of the developers, Agile, waterfall or a hybrid, this platform can help them deploy applications across different clouds.
In short, this partnership is yet another attempt to close the gap between development and operations in a world where DevOps is the new mantra. This gives both the companies a better shot at the enterprise cloud market where the competition is getting stronger and stronger everyday.
