Google Labs is a blessing: it allows the creation of useful new features that otherwise would possibly take forever to add… the downside that by turning “labs” on we all agree to be guinea-pigs.  But there’s nothing new in that…

The two Labs-related news today:  Google Tasks has graduated, it’s no longer a Lab feature, but a standard part of Gmail.  (To be honest, I was originally not too impressed, have not checked it since).

Perhaps more important is the fact that Google Calendar now has a Labs feature, too. (Not yet turned on on my Google Apps account – you may be lucky to see it on yours.)  I hope it opens the floodgate to new and innovative features .. or even just to copycats, but useful ones:

Please, please, Mighty Google, can I have colored labels for different event types?

It may appear a cosmetic enhancement, but I find it terribly useful to see business meetings, phone conferences, medical appointments, cultural events with a different color at a glance.  Oh, while at it, you may give them tags, too, so we can both see and filter.  The only way to do this today is creating a set of different Google Calendars for all those categories, assign them colors than pull them back to your master calendar … but that may just create a bunch of synchronization problems with external sites / programs.

Colors is the last thing I am missing since I gave up Outlook – and I'm obviously not the only one.
