Recently, I had a Twitbate (Twitter Debate) with a Silicon Angle Analyst
and few other members of Clouderati about the Microsoft's position with
respect to the Cloud. The general discussion centered around whether
Microsoft can be successful in the Cloud game or not. The opinions
ranged from a outright dismissal as non-starter to a possibility of
replicating their success from the traditional desktop era. It is fun to
be part of the Clouderati these days with many interesting discussions
on topics related to Cloud Computing. I thought I will do a post on my
take about Microsoft and explain the reasoning behind it. It will be a good
discussion if readers of this blog jump in and enrich
everyone including me.
Microsoft, after trying so hard to dismiss the idea of Cloud Computing
as a plain hype, jumped right into the game with announcements about
Windows Azure at the last year's PDC. They followed it up with an announcement
about Office 2010 and its SaaS component. At the moment, they appear to
be serious about the cloud game but the question is whether they are
really serious and even if they are serious, can they
win big. In my opinion, Microsoft under Ray Ozzie has clearly
understood that the ground under them is clearly shifting and if they
don't make a jump now, they may end up going down the hole. They are
serious about the cloud game but they are confused and not confident
about how to execute. I really want them to win in this game but it is a mammoth
task for them to even make a small impact. Whether they can survive the
onslaught of competition and make it big, only time can tell us.
My opinion about them is shaped by various factors and I will list them out below.

Hi Krishnan, I'd like to summarize my perspective from our Twitter discussion a couple of nights ago. Microsoft has limitless market reach and R&D resources that make them very tough to discount. I have seen numerous entrepreneurs make bets time and time again that Microsoft would not succeed in their specific market, resulting in those entrepreneurs being successful for a period of time until Microsoft decided to get serious in their particular space, at which point it was then game over for them. It's also very important to remember that despite how quickly this market is evolving, we are still in the VERY early days of cloud computing, and MSFT have almost always been followers and can wait for others to trailblaze given the size of their balance sheet. Once other vendors get the economic, technological, and business model just right, Microsoft can replicate these learnings and use their scale to obliterate the competition. I think it is also worth remembering the MASSIVE reach .NET development and Visual Studio have in the marketplace especially in the SMB space, exactly the place where cloud economics are transformative for IT operations by delivering application functionality that was never available to that market before. Given the massive cloud hype, imagine how many .NET developers would love to jam their current applications onto Azure & say "yup, we're cloud" by leveraging Visual Studio's push button deployment, and how many SMB's who already understand and trust Microsoft's infrastructure would find that appealing. In summary, while I have no ability to predict the future and completely see the tight logic of your arguments, I would also say it is way too early to declare any winners in a hyper volatile market, and Microsoft has the resources and acumen to figure it out. Nenshad, I am with you regarding who the winner and loser will be. It is too early to call anyone a winner.
Does it come down to who is best to provision frictionless secure trusted business via the cloud? Currently I'd hazard a guess Microsoft is deliberately 'cloudy' about it's market place intentions for Azure. Why tip off Google... Leaving the pundits to scoff over comparative cloud computing technology and the established market place players misreading the tea-leaves. Consider Microsoft combines an understanding of the SMB market place and has the channel and technological capabilities to innovate new products for the mass market like few other players. Layer on the big shift, an exponential growth in new devices, laptops, smart phones, sensors. Who is going to orchestrate solutions from all the data generated? Amazon and Google offer are Cloud based aim at start-ups or consumers. But on premise web services as know them have failed. I cannot connect to order a pizza, or buy an plane ticket without logging into a business web site. Making a dentist appointment on line is still out of reach; and linking to insurance a pipe dream. Who has the DNA to solve this problem and make a profit doing so...
A likely scenario is that MSFT will lead the development of applications in private clouds (which is where it has the most supporters) while GOOG will dominate applications of larger scale outside corporate firewalls. If this happens the key question would be what segment is bigger and more profitable.
Azure is available in PHP http://phpazure.codeplex.com/ and Azure web server run PHP. Microsoft have local representative for assistance and legal issue, other player don't have this.
