Going through my twitter followers tonight to see who decided to follow me for whatever reason. What is surprising to me is the number of followers I would consider spammers or people who I just do not want to associate with professionally. Which then got me thinking to do a little back checking, and yep, sure enough, some of my twitter messages are coming through on their web sites or blogs looking like they have an authoritative following even though I am not following them back.

Very interesting and it is probably well worth the time to go through your twitter followers to see how they are using the implied “internet friendship” that they have set up between you and them when they follow you. This also means something much more wrong for the scores of auto follows that people use as a way to ensure that they are being polite. Not everyone is worth following, and not everyone on twitter or any other service means you well either.

The sad part is that in terms of statistics, I am blocking about 20% of my followers tonight, especially those that decided that they wanted to use an implied connection between groups that does not exist in reality.

Might be time to go through your twitter followers, or just about any followers on any system and make sure that they are good reputable people and not spammers. In our knee jerk social media aware world, you are who you associate with online.
