3Tera, the cloud
vendor offering a platform that makes it easy to deploy applications,
scale up and down and secure the infrastructure, has announced 3Tera App Store,
much like Apple’s iPhone App Store, a marketplace for Cloud Computing
components directed towards enterprises. My previous coverage of
3Tera’s Applogic platform is here and Paul Miller’s podcast on his conversations with 3tera co-founder is here.
The
app store will offer 3tera’s enterprise customers an easy way to buy
infrastructure components, complete applications, server components,
etc.. Everything from networking components like load balancers,
firewalls, routers, etc to server components like web servers, database
servers, application servers, etc.. The marketplace will offer allow
service providers to offer their cloud based services to the 3Tera
customers. It will also host management services, monitoring, etc.. The
app store will go live in the third quarter of this year.
This
is nothing new or ground breaking. Already, we are seeing a strong
ecosystem around Amazon web services. We see a market place for selling
AMIs for EC2, Apps for S3, Management products and services for EC2,
etc.. In the case of Amazon, the marketplace has evolved into an
ecosystem around Amazon. What 3Tera is trying to do is to tie the app
store to the 3Tera platform much like what Apple has done with its
iPhone App Store.
Already, Zeus technology
has signed up to be a partner in the app store. They will be offering
their enterprise grade load balancer and traffic manager to 3Tera’s
customers. Other initial partners includes CohesiveFT, GlobalLogic,
Layer 7 Technologies, SOASTA, Tap In Systems, etc.. In fact, it is a
great start and such an ecosystem for any platform will help propel
them towards more adoption. This will also help rope in more
enterprises to use Cloud Computing. Since the components from the app
store can be installed in public, “private” and hybrid cloud
environments, it will be interesting to see how enterprises embrace
this ecosystem as they jump into Cloud bandwagon.
