    I generally agree with your analysis, however, Whatsapp has one problem, it doesn’t have a fundamental lock-in, a way to make users loyal to the service other that their friends are using it. Adoption of a different app may happen overnight. I think buying it would be a big mistake for either Google or Facebook. Mark my words, this is going to me a nice story in martketing school class and a epic fail.
