London Wiki Wednesday – enterprise taster for Social Media Week

Obligatory WIki PhotoLondon Wiki Wednesday, the evening meetup for wiki geeks, business geeks and anyone wanting to discuss the use of social media technology inside their organisation is restarting for 2011 this Wednesday February 2nd – 18:15 onwards for a 19:00 start at NYK Shipping near Moorgate.  Back in 2007 and 2008 we had almost monthly sessions with 25 or more and sometimes up to 60 people attending.  During 2009 we had bit of a hiatus, mainly because of the difficulty in getting venues and sponsors for some free eats and drinks.  Since restarting in September 2009 we’ve had meetings up to July last year, more often than not at NYK, which thanks to Alek Lotoczko has become our default venue.   A core group of Alek, Harry Wood, Gordon Joly, Andrew Black and I have kept the idea alive.  However, I have this feeling in my gut that a regular enterprise oriented social media event is missing from the current London scene.  Maybe that’s why we’ve had 26 people sign up for this week’s session?  We’ll see.

It’s very likely that this week’s main speaker is the real draw.  My good friend Euan Semple will be along to talk enterprise use of wiki’s and lead an initial discussion.  After that we will follow the usual format of allowing anyone who turns up to speak for 5 minutes (and then answer up to 5 minutes of questions) about anything they like as long as it is wiki related.  People talk about their latest project, wiki issues, or wiki related products they’ve found.  The emphasis is on sharing ideas and experience, and we usually get a great cross section of ideas and new things.  Social Media week hits London next week, and this event will be a good , enterprise oriented taster for anyone interested in the topic.  We haven’t got a sponsor for this event, so I’m not sure what we’ll be able to afford in terms of refreshments, but we have to thank NYK for providing us the space.  We’d like to think we can carry on and hold events on the first Wednesday of every month, but that will be driven by a combination of demand, and our ability to get sponsors.  If you are interested in hosting one of our events, and can afford up to £200 from the marketing budget for some beer, wine and pizzas, then we’d like to hear from you and we’d love to do some promotion in return.  Please drop me a line if you are interested.  For full details of this week’s event, and how to sign up go here – everybody’s welcome.
